Restoring a Lost Habitat
In 2021, Finca Sagrada and Swiss non-profit, Arbol Co(n)razon, piloted a project to reforest the Sacred Mountain. In the beginning of the 20th century, its natural forests were burned to make way for grazing pastures and the practice is continued by many farmers in the surrounding valley to this day.
Two years later, the project has been declared a definitive success. An impressive 18,700 trees have been planted with an 80% survival rate and 840 meters of swales have been created for rainwater harvesting.

Community Impact
The impact of this initiative is more than ecological. The project has also strengthened the local community while respecting its culture and needs – it has created a long-term, fair wage for 6 young people in Tumianuma, a barrio of Vilcabamba. Arbol Co(n)razon also has a youth education program in Tumianuma, where the children learn about sustainable development methods.
The local community is the key to restoring and protecting our mountain forests. Without them, we can achieve nothing. With them, we can achieve everything.

Vision for the Future
Arbol Co(razon) has recently partnered with with the Green Jewel Foundation from Loja, a
local nature conservation organization, and the EcossLab of the Universidad Técnica Particular de Loja (UTPL). They are setting up an environmental education program, establishing a biodiversity monitoring system, carrying out ecological research projects. Their goal is to create a working, replicable model that can fortify the regional ecology.
A Continued Alliance
Finca Sagrada is proud to partner with Arbol Co(n)razon in their reforestation efforts. Finca Sagrada regularly donates tree starts, equipment & materials, labor, and funding to support the reforestation of our mountain. We hope to educate and inspire the surrounding area to adopt more sustainable practices and protect this beautiful land for generations to come.
